Chicho Gallo: A Rare Ethiopian Landrace with Floral and Fruity Complexity
Chicho Gallo is a rare specialty coffee variety known for its distinctive character and complex flavour. Grown primarily by the Hartmann family in Panama, it gained recognition after placing first in the Best of Panama Varietals category in both 2022 (94 points) and 2023 (92.38 points with the Gold Selection lot).
It is an Ethiopian heirloom (landrace) from the Amaro region, introduced to Panama by the Hartmann family and named after Ratibor “Chicho” Hartmann. While some sources suggest a possible link to Geisha, the primary account describes it as an Ethiopian landrace.
In the cup
Chicho Gallo typically shows vibrant fruit and delicate florals. Common notes include blueberry, strawberry, peach, lychee, and tropical or stone fruit, often with bergamot, white flowers, or black tea aromas. Exact flavours vary by lot and processing, but it is consistently valued for its sweetness, fragrance, and complexity.
Brewing
Pour-over brewing highlights its nuanced profile, bringing out floral aromas, juicy fruit, and natural sweetness.
With its Ethiopian heritage, strong competition results, and limited availability, Chicho Gallo appeals to those seeking something distinctive beyond familiar profiles. It offers a memorable sensory experience where floral elegance and bright fruitiness come together.
